GREAT Preproposal FAQs

1.

Q.   Will the awards flow through the campus sponsored research offices or be made through direct campus fund transfers through the accounting offices?

A.   Funding will be made through an Interlocation Transfer of Funds, directly from UC BREP to the PI's account.
2.

Q.   Can you apply if you are an undergraduate who is applying to graduate school for 2006?

A.   Yes. You can have your UC faculty sponsor you as a nominee if you are a graduate student at the time of the award commencement, which would be July 1, 2006.
3.

Q.   For the 2-page narrative, can I use a third page for the references?

A.   Yes.
4.

Q.   I am a graduate student interested submitting a pre-proposal for the GREAT Training Grant. I would be proposing to work with a team of three faculty on my project. Can I name all three sponsors, since I will be advised by each of them throughout my project? Or if only two should be named as sponsors, can the third be named as a mentor?

A.   You may name two sponsors (the primary sponsor is our contact person) and two mentors. Sponsors with less oversight than others may be designated as a mentor.
5.

Q.   Do all sponsors have to be faculty at a UC? Is it sufficient that Dr. XXXX is an adjunct professor at the UC?

A.   We ask that a sponsor be an outstanding member of the University of California (UC) and/or the UC-administered national laboratories' scientific research community. Therefore, Dr. XXXX qualifies since he holds an academic appointment as adjunct professor at the UC. Use his UC appointment title and contact information on the faculty sponsor's pre-proposal form since all sponsors must be named and must provide a signature.
6.

Q.   Who submits the pre-proposal?

A.   Faculty Sponsor(s) submit a pre-proposal with or without a trainee nomination by Tuesday, October 25, 2005, 11:00 AM.
7.

Q.   When is the electronic pre-proposal due?

A.   October 25th, 2005 at 11:00 AM is the due date for the electronic pre-proposal. October 31th, 2005 is the due date for the original copies of the signature page.
8.

Q.   Do I need to send a printed copy of the pre-proposal to you?

A.   No. Use the electronic on-line system to submit your pre-proposal. You must send the original signature page to us by October 31, 2005.

Q.   Where is the signature page? My sponsors are at different campuses and it will take awhile to get the necessary signatures.

A.   Once you submit your pre-proposal, you will receive a message confirming the submission and directions to print the signature page. For multi-campus submissions, you may send individual signature pages. That is, the signatures do not have to be on one page.
